Developing the Land for Deer

One of the reasons I wanted to develop our ranch for deer hunting, really good hunting, is because I was spoiled. I went to the Stuart Ranch in Caddo Oklahoma which is about 2 and a half hours northwest of Mount Pleasant, Texas. I saw one of the biggest 5 year old bucks that I have ever seen.

Clay Forst and his brothers have developed their ranch for both cattle and wildlife. The Stuart Ranch encompasses several thousand acres which runs both cattle and wildlife. Through nutrition in the feeders and deer plots, they have capitalized on the genetics to have some of the best free range deer in the country. Having really good does and fawns is the same in my book to having really good cows and calves. Make sure the does and fawns are healthy for the future.

Given how close the Stuart Ranch is to the Priefert Ranch, I don’t see any reason why we can’t have similar success. Over the past 30 years or so, our ranch has been developed around cattle. We have a lot of good grasses, but not much woods for cover. If you don’t have woods for cover, you won’t have many deer. In the last 5 years, I’ve planted around 40,000 different oak and pine trees. I’m trying to get everything going now so that I’ll have something to enjoy with my boys in the future.
